Yorkshire Life Reader Event - Mount St John, Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Readers took to the paths of one of Yorkshire’s most exclusive gardens at the Mount St John estate near Thirsk. The stunning private gardens are designed by Chelsea award-winning garden designer Tom Stuart-Smith.

Head gardener Chris Gough and green keeper Oliver Shepherd led groups of readers around the estate’s newly recreated gardens including a kitchen garden, explaining how much thought and work had gone into creating something very special.

The house and gardens belong to passionate gardener Chris Blundell and his family. He collaborated with Tom Stuart-Smith in the £2.25millon project which included cutting back hedges to reclaim a panoramic view across the Vale of York and planting thousands of plants, as many as possible native to the area.

The project has employed local people and the gardening team come from around the county.

After the tour, lunch, made with produce from the Mount St John kitchen garden, was served at the nearby Carpenters Arms in Felixkirk, part of the Provenance Group and headed up by Michael Ibbotson of the award-winning Durham Ox at Crayke.

The Carpenters Arms was completely refurbished and re-opened last year.

Mount St John Salad with Yellison goat’s cheese, Mount St John roasted beetroot, peas, leaves from garden, honey and mint dressing

Main course
Herbs from the garden, poached salmon, a warm salad of new potatoes, Mount St John leaves, tomato and pine nut salsa

Dessert
Summer Pimms jelly with strawberries, cucumber and mint sorbet
